Bennet Outage Update

The outage from Friday night (Jan 10, 2020) in the Bennet area was a short notice scheduled outage. We apologize for the inconvenience but are thankful for a customer’s call that had us looking into a concern that led us in finding the fuse protection equipment was failing. In order for our crews to safely replace it the power outage to be scheduled. It was necessary to allow our crews to replace the fuse protection equipment right away to prevent a future unscheduled long-term outage and additional damages.

Crews were able to replace the equipment and restore the power in less than 30 minutes.  We are continually working to improve the stability of the power source in this area and appreciate your patience as we strive to provide the best possible service at the lowest possible cost. 

While some power outages are unexpected due to accidents, animals, lightning and trees some are due to equipment for maintenance, failure and/or the need to add addition equipment.

We are consistently working to improve the power source by updating and replacing equipment as well as adding varmint guards and pole wraps to deter animals from climbing the poles and causing unexpected outages. Along with adding lightning arresters and conductor guards, we have completed extensive tree trimming from the West side of the Sub Station in Syracuse (which provides the power to Unadilla, Palmyra, Douglas, Bennet  and all of the Rural customers along the way.

Mayor Bryan Bequette proclaims April 8, 2019 Electric Utility Line Workers Day. Jon Griebe and Carl Abbot represented Nebraska City Utilities and recieved the proclomation from Mayor Bequette on behalf of Nebraska City Utilities and all the utility line workers.

Nebraska City Utilities, in partnership with the Arbor Day Foundation’s Energy-Saving Trees program, is offering a limited number of free trees to customers through the Energy-Saving Trees program. When you plant the right tree in the right place, it can help save energy and reduce utility bills. The benefits don’t stop at cost savings. Trees improve air and water quality, help relieve stress and make yards more enjoyable. That’s a win-win!

March 2019 Flooding

At this time we do not have any concern about our city water. The water supply is safe. Our water plant is operating normally. We are able to operate our wells in our well field. There is no concern that we can foresee with the water supply.

If we feel there is a change or a concern, we will provide notification through website and social media.

Our apologies for the quality of the video due to the short notice of needing to address this concern and still wanting to provide reassurance to our customers.

Winter Safety with Gas Meters

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO KEEP YOUR METER CLEAR OF SNOW AND ICE BUILDUP?

  • Accumulated snow places stress on your meter piping. Damage to the piping can cause a gas leak.
  • If there is an emergency, emergency response crews need clear access to your meter.
  • Excessive snow cover may result in abnormal pressure, affect appliance operation and interrupt your service.
  • Ice and snow may block the electronic reading of your meter. Our desire is to accurately bill your gas usage.

Power Outages and Animals

Are squirrels the only animal that causes power outages?

Squirrels are particularly pesky, followed by birds, raccoons, rats and snakes. While here at Nebraska City Utilities lately our most pesky creature has been the raccoon. Animal-caused outages may be difficult to detect because carcasses are not always easily found. The interruption in power can be a short blink that may only last a few seconds to a catastrophic failure that lasts longer.

Many of these creatures are attracted to the humming warmth of electrical equipment, while snakes slither into substations looking for food, often bird’s nests.

Nebraska City Utilities installs pole wraps and insulated cover ups in problem areas to help prevent animal contact.

Some unusual animal-related outages include:

    • A turkey made its way into a substation in North Platte, Ne and caused over 6,000 people to be without electricity 2 days after Thanksgiving 2015.
    • A cow rubbing against a guy wire, broke a primary line in Mooresville, NC. Duke Energy workers found the cow on its back and all 4 legs up in the air, it was reported the cow didn’t fare well in the end.
    • Tent caterpillars cause numerous power outages in Liberty, Tx. When thousands of them hatching from eggs in trees covered the transformers.

Other problem animals can be skunks, wild cats (bob cats, mountain lions, etc.)

Any time an interruption in power occurs our crews are sent out to inspect our lines and to look for why the interruption happened.
